Who Should Attend?

This course is for anyone involved with maintaining fire extinguishers to become a ‘competent person’ in accordance with the recommendations in BS5306-3:2017.

This course is appropriate for:

• • Technicians working in the Fire Trade who will be servicing portable fire extinguishers
  • Security Staff providing fire and security cover on large sites
  • Engineers that provide bulidings and plant maintenance
  • Fire Alarm / System Engineers looking to increase their skills base
  • Facility Management multi-disciplinary engineers

Course Programme

This intensive three-day programme introduces the student to the requirements of BS5306-3:2017, BS5306-8:2012 and BS5306-9:2015 in a structured manner, covering how to commission, install and maintain any portable fire extinguisher manufactured to BS EN3.

The course covers:

• • Fire extinguishing methods
  • Classes of Fire, combustion and heat transmission
  • Fire legislation, regulations and appropriate British / European standards
  • Type, construction and safe operation of fire extinguishers
  • New products
  • Servicing procedures - Commissioning, Basic, Extended and Overhaul
  • Selection, provision and siting of extinguishers
  • Practical servicing experience

All our courses are run by Alan Palmer in an open and friendly manner. Students are encouraged to get actively involved, ask questions, discuss issues/topics and share their experiences.

The student receives a comprehensive technician's manual and will be given revision papers during the course to ready them for the BS5306-3 exam invigilated by BAFE.

Time will be given outside of the classroom if any student needs additional learning support.

BAFE Invigilation

Independent invigilation is carried out on day 4 by BAFE and consists of:

• • A two-hour closed book written paper consisting of 40 questions.
  • A one-to-one practical invigilation lasting no more than 30 minutes.

Arrangements can sometimes be made for dyslexic students if we are advised at the time of booking, but this may incur additional cost.
