| Annual General Meeting 2010 Annual General Meeting 2010 | |
The Annual General Meeting was held on Friday the 5th February at the prestigious Brooklands Museum. We had 30 people in attendance out of membership on the day of the meeting of 69 members. This is a phenomenal achievement especially considering that we do not expect members to have to attend meetings!
The meeting was upbeat with members having plenty of time to mingle over coffee and a buffet lunch. We were fortunate in having interesting speakers all of whom were informative with presentations relative to our industry. Jim Creaks' Fire Safety Signs presentation will be of interest to all members and is available as a PDF download below.
Many new friendships were generated during the AGM and while roaming around the museums exhibits, then the state of the art technology demonstrated at Mercedes Benz World. In the evening many members met up again at the AGM Dinner & Dance held at the Shepperton Holiday Inn to talk and dance until the small hours. By all accounts the AGM was productive and a great time was had by all.

| Morgan Fire Protection found their membership of the UKFA to be particularly beneficial recently. The company received an urgent request from a customer to carry out a hose reel installation in the Midlands following a serious fire, which we were not able to fulfill. Paul Creasey had recently attended a UKFA event, and through a new industry contact was able to quickly subcontract the work. |

It's been a busy time for the UK Fire Association
in our first year.
Getting the organisation up and running included:
- Forming a limited company
- Setting up a bank account
- Finding people to run it
- Finding companies who wanted to join it
|
 |
Well the first two things were easy enough. A limited company to protect our members
was available off the shelf and the bank (though unwilling at first) agreed to
give us a 'fee free' account providing that we ran the association for little
or no financial gain. Finding people to run it
.. well there's always a few mugs
like us around, working for nothing, listening to endless problems from folk,
etc. etc.
not much different from running any other business really, I'm sure
that you have all been there at some time or other. The last point i.e. 'Finding
companies who wanted to join us' was the one we feared most. If no-one joined
then we would have looked a bit silly. If only a few people had shown any interest
then we probably couldn't have afforded to run it. Let's face it no-one like's
to look like a complete fool and that's what we faced if it all went wrong. We
calculated that we really needed to get around thirty to thirty five member companies
in our first year to make this feasible, were there enough people of principle
who were brave (or foolhardy) enough to put their trust in a completely new organisation
that embraced honest, low running costs and a simple straightforward 'non big
brother' attitude to its members
It seems that there were.

Welcome to the newly formed UK Fire Association. It is an exciting time to be
in the fire protection industry and I am enjoying being involved with my colleagues
running the UK Fire Association. My thanks go to Perry Leaver who put so much
time last year into establishing this organisation.
From the feedback we are receiving, the fire industry has long been waiting an association like this! We are going to build this association using every ones knowledge and experience. I alone have over 30 years experience within the fire industry so imagine what we can achieve if we all pool our expertise and experience together. We want to assemble a regionally represented Steering Group so that varying factors affecting business in the different parts of the UK can be taken into consideration.
Ultimately we want to help members who want up to date technical support and industry news that affects them. The support will be available to help members wanting to digress into new markets that compliment the one(s) they are already in e.g. helping a fire alarms company move into extinguishers or residential fire sprinkler systems or dry risers or fire risk assessments, etc.
Join us now, then attend a meeting, read the emails and be proud to have the UK
Fire Association logo on the bottom of your paperwork, I am. I will be pleased
to receive your news, views and ideas at chairman@uk-fa.org.
Membership costs just £200 per annum, the joining fee of £35 is being
temporarily waived until 1st May 2010. BAFE Scheme SP101 accredited companies and members of FIA,
IFEDA and BFC will be accepted through the fast track joining process without
needing to go through auditing (however we do reserve the right to audit any prospective
member). Companies that have recently resigned membership of one of these trade
associations may still qualify for fast track membership contact the Secretary
for information.
